USG abdomen and pelvis is a safe, painless, radiation-free ultrasound that examines the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, and pelvic organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and prostate.
It helps detect fatty liver, cirrhosis, gallstones, kidney stones, cysts, tumors, and hydronephrosis. In women, it identifies fibroids, ovarian cysts, and PCOS. In men, it shows prostate enlargement.
It also detects appendicitis, abdominal fluid (ascites), enlarged lymph nodes, and abdominal masses, guiding further tests and treatment.
You should get a USG abdomen and pelvis if you have abdominal or pelvic pain, bloating, nausea, jaundice, burning or frequent urination, blood in the urine, or a lump in the abdomen. Women may need it for irregular periods or heavy bleeding, and men for urinary difficulty. It is also used for abnormal liver or kidney tests and routine check-ups.
Fast for 6–8 hours before a USG abdomen and pelvis, as this helps show the gallbladder clearly and reduces gas. About 1 hour before the scan, drink 4–6 glasses of water and don't urinate, as a full bladder is needed to view pelvic organs. Avoid fizzy drinks, wear loose clothing, and bring previous reports.
Yes, fasting is required for a USG abdomen and pelvis. You should fast for 6–8 hours before the scan, as food and gas can block the view of the gallbladder and other organs. You may drink water, and you should arrive with a full bladder, so drink 4–6 glasses of water about 1 hour beforehand.
