Semen analysis key highlights

A semen analysis you can see for yourself

  • Fully automated analyser

Your semen analysis is performed on a fully automated analyser, which measures every sample the same way.

  • Real images on your report

Your report shows actual microscope images of your own sample, not just numbers.

  • Sperm vitality included

We check how many of your sperm are alive as part of the semen analysis. Many labs charge for this test separately.

  • Watch your sperm on video

Scan the QR code on your report to watch the video of your sperm analysis.

Inside the sperm

  1. 01 · Head

    The head carries the DNA

Its nucleus holds 23 chromosomes, tightly packed: half of your baby's genes. The cap over its tip, the acrosome, holds enzymes that help it through the egg's outer layer.

    Checked in your package:

    • DNA fragmentation
    • Morphology
  2. 02 · Neck

The neck links head and tail

A short, flexible joint. It carries the centriole, which helps a fertilised egg organise its first cell division.

    Checked in your package:

    • Morphology
  3. 03 · Midpiece

    The midpiece powers the swim

Mitochondria wound round it in a spiral make the energy the tail needs to beat.

    Checked in your package:

    • Motility
    • Morphology
  4. 04 · Tail

    The tail drives it forward

It beats in a whip-like wave that pushes the sperm ahead. Your semen analysis measures how many sperm move, and how well: their motility.

    Checked in your package:

    • Motility
    • Morphology

The sperm's journey

  1. 01 · Vagina

    Millions set off

One ejaculate carries millions of sperm. The vagina is acidic, which is hard on sperm, and semen shields them from it only for a while.

  2. 02 · Cervix

    The cervix screens them

Its mucus filters out sperm that swim poorly or are badly shaped. Around ovulation it turns thin and slippery, and lets the strong swimmers through.

  3. 03 · Uterus

    Up through the uterus

Those that get through swim on toward the two fallopian tubes, helped along by contractions of the uterus. Usually only one tube holds an egg.

  4. 04 · Fallopian tube

A few thousand reach the tubes

There they are held in the lining of the tube, where sperm can survive for up to 7 days. Near ovulation they are released, ready to fertilise and swimming harder.

  5. 05 · The egg

A few hundred reach the egg

Guided toward it, they push through the cells around the egg to its outer shell, the zona pellucida.

  6. 06 · Fertilisation

    Only one gets in

The first sperm to fuse with the egg sets off a change that hardens its shell, so no other can enter. Its DNA joins the egg's: half of your baby's genes. So the DNA it carries matters.

What is a DNA fragmentation test?

  1. 01 · Your DNA

    Your sperm carry your DNA

That is important genetic information: half of your baby's genes, coiled tight in the head of every sperm. Don't you think you should know whether your sperm carry healthy DNA or not?

  2. 02 · The blind spot

A sperm can look perfect and still carry broken DNA

Count, movement and shape don't show what's inside. The WHO semen manual notes that DNA damage is only partly related to semen quality.

  3. 03 · The damage

    Breaks build up quietly

Heat, smoking, infection, a varicocele and age are among the causes linked to sperm DNA damage.

  4. 04 · The measure

A DNA fragmentation test puts a number on it

It finds the share of your sperm with broken DNA: your DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI). On our report, below 15% is normal and above 30% is high.

    • Below 15%: Normal
    • 15–30%: Moderate
    • Above 30%: High

Under the microscope

A semen analysis examines sperm.A DFI test examines their DNA.

Move the lens over the slide. In the sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) test we use, sperm with intact DNA form a halo; sperm with fragmented DNA form a small halo or none.

Large Halo: intact DNASmall or no halo: fragmented DNAIllustration. Your report gives the share of sperm with fragmented DNA.

Why it matters

High DNA fragmentation is linked to

  • How the embryo develops

The WHO semen manual notes that DNA damage may affect embryo development, implantation and pregnancy.

  • Failed IUI or IVF

European urology guidelines link high DNA damage to lower pregnancy rates after IUI and poorer IVF results.

  • Repeated miscarriages

High DNA fragmentation is associated with recurrent pregnancy loss, so guidelines advise testing the male partner.

  • Unexplained infertility

It has been linked to infertility in men whose semen report is normal.

Normal

Most sperm carry intact DNA.

Ranges as printed on our report. Your doctor reads your DFI with the rest of your results.

Why a package

Why we put both tests in one package

A semen analysis and a DNA fragmentation test look at different things. Done together, on one sample, they give a complete assessment of your sperm.

Automated semen analysis

Report in 4 hrs

What it looks at

How many sperm there are, how they move, their shape and how many are alive.

  • Count, motility, morphology, vitality
  • Volume, pH, viscosity
  • Pus cells / RBCs
  • Microscope images
  • Sperm video by QR code

Sperm DNA fragmentation

Report in 5 days

What it looks at

The DNA inside them: how many of your sperm carry broken DNA.

  • DNA Fragmentation Index (SCD method)
  • 5-level halo classification
  • Annotated microscope images of the DNA analysis
  • A normal semen report can hide DNA damage

A semen analysis looks at sperm, not inside them. Fertility guidelines note that a sperm that looks and moves normally can still carry a high level of DNA fragmentation.

  • WHO lists the DNA test beyond the basics

The WHO semen manual describes sperm DNA fragmentation testing in its extended examination, a step beyond the basic semen analysis.

  • One sample, one visit

Both tests run on the same sample, so you come in once and get two reports. The semen analysis comes free.

The evidence

What WHO and fertility guidelines say

A semen report alone can't predict fertility

“For an individual patient, a semen analysis is never prognostic of fertility…”

WHO semen manual, section 1.2

DNA testing adds what a semen report misses

“Since [sperm DNA fragmentation] is only partially related to semen quality, it could represent an important addition in the work-up of male infertility…”

WHO semen manual, section 3.2

DNA damage can affect the embryo and the pregnancy

“…multiple meta-analyses published in recent years indicate that [sperm DNA fragmentation] may affect embryo development, implantation, and pregnancies in both natural and assisted reproduction.”

WHO semen manual, section 3.2

European Association of Urology

Guidelines on Sexual and Reproductive Health, 2026

Strong recommendation

“Perform sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) testing in the assessment of couples with recurrent pregnancy loss from natural conception and failure of ART or males with unexplained infertility.”

ART is assisted reproduction, such as IUI and IVF. Source(opens in a new tab)

American Urological Association & ASRM

Diagnosis and Treatment of Infertility in Men, 2020 (amended 2024)

“Even with a ‘normal’ [semen analysis], a sperm that appears morphologically and functionally normal may … have a high level of DNA fragmentation.”

It advises testing the male partner for DNA fragmentation after recurrent pregnancy loss. Source(opens in a new tab)

Is it for you?

Who should take the DNA test

Guidelines recommend it after

  • Two or more miscarriages
  • A failed IUI or IVF cycle
  • Infertility with no clear cause

European Association of Urology, 2026: strong recommendation.

Also worth asking about if you have

  • A normal semen report, but no pregnancy yet
  • Varicocele (swollen veins in the scrotum)
  • Smoking, obesity or regular heat exposure
  • Aged 40 or over
  • Past genital infection or chemotherapy
