An arterial and venous Doppler of both lower limbs is a non-invasive, radiation-free ultrasound that checks blood flow in the arteries and veins of both legs.
The arterial study detects peripheral artery disease (PAD), narrowed or blocked arteries, and aneurysms, which cause leg pain on walking, non-healing wounds, and gangrene, especially in diabetes and smokers.
The venous study detects deep vein thrombosis (DVT), varicose veins, and chronic venous insufficiency, which cause leg swelling, pain, and venous ulcers.
It guides treatment, surgery, and follow-up.
You should get an arterial and venous Doppler of both legs if you have leg pain while walking, cold or numb feet, non-healing wounds, leg swelling, visible varicose veins, skin discoloration, or leg ulcers. It is also recommended for people with diabetes, smoking habits, or high cholesterol. Sudden painful swelling of one leg needs urgent testing for DVT.
No special preparation or fasting is required for an arterial and venous Doppler of both legs. Wear loose clothing or shorts for easy access to your legs, and remove compression stockings before the scan. Avoid smoking for at least 2 hours beforehand, as it narrows blood vessels. Continue your regular medicines and bring previous reports.
